Horsham Writers Circle Hilaire Belloc The Sussex Laureate

Hilaire Belloc is the front-runner for the accolade of being the District’s most famous literary figure of recent times. Having spent his boyhood in Slindon, he moved to Shipley where he remained for the rest of his life. Belloc was a poet, historian, satirist, soldier, MP and political activist. The author of more than 150 books, he’s best known now, perhaps, for his humorous ‘Cautionary Tales for Children’ – comic poems that have had a great influence on children’s writers ever since. Roald Dahl, for example, speaking at the Puffin Book Fair in 1989, said of them, ‘I knew every one of those Belloc Tales by heart by the time I was 8,9,10 … I wanted to do something like that …”. Find out about the life and works of this towering literary and political figure at our talk and in our library displays.
The talk, including performances from some of the pupils of the School, will take place at The Towers School, Upper Beeding, BN44 3TF. Tickets cost £5.00 (children £2.50) with discounts for staff and pupils. The price includes a Belloc-themed light meal, with Sussex cheese, bread, vegetables and meat. Refreshments, including Sussex beer and wine will also be available. To book your tickets please contact [email protected] Our speaker is the well-known Sussex-born historian, author and broadcaster Kevin Newman.
The library displays, with an account of his life and works, will be in Horsham and District’s libraries throughout June, as well as on our website (see below).
Horsham Writers Circle is a lively and friendly group of enthusiastic writers. We meet monthly to develop our writing skills and support members’ writing projects.
