Horsham Writers Circle Percy Bysshe Shelley – Horsham’s Most Famous Writer
Shelley’s poetry and ideas have influenced the writing and thoughts of generations. Political activists from the early 1800’s through to the present day have found inspiration from his radical ideas. Indeed, his demand for democracy – “We are the many – they are the few” could be heard up and down the country during the 2016 General Election. His brilliant lyricism has influenced poets across the world. Raised in Broadbridge Heath, he was thrown out of Oxford University for not renouncing atheism. A vegetarian, which was most unusual for the time, he wrote with knowledge and passion about all that was happening in the world around him – from the economics of food production to the violent political upheavals of the age and its great scientific discoveries.
He is well worth getting to know, and not just for his elopement and marriage to 17-year old Mary Shelley – the famous author of Frankenstein – although that, too, is quite a story.
We are celebrating Shelley’s life and works with a presentation at Pizza Express in East Street, Horsham, where special Shelley-topped pizzas will be on offer. The event is free (‘though you’ll have to pay for your pizzas!). We need to know numbers intending to come as there are limited tables available, so please book early by e-mailing [email protected]
