Twenty Gruffalo toys, sponsored by a variety of local businesses, have been sent out into the world to celebrate the 20th anniversary of The Gruffalo, written by Horsham District resident Julia Donaldson CBE.
The toys are part of the Global Gruffalo project, created as part of the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 to celebrate the patron of the Year, Julia Donaldson CBE, and the 20th anniversary of her most famous book, The Gruffalo.
The launch took place at Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens in Lower Beeding, Horsham today (Thursday 10 January), with a performance of the Gruffalo by Julia and special guests to children from the Holy Trinity CEP School, Horsham.
The concept behind Global Gruffalo is straightforward –
- Receive a Gruffalo
- Take a picture, and upload to the website www.globalgruffalo.co.uk with where you are in the world OR add to social media via @GlobalGruffalo #GlobalGruffalo
- Give him to someone else to do the same!
It’s planned that all 20 will return to Horsham by the end of the year so they can feature in a year-long exhibition at Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens during 2020, where people will be able to see the toys and discover their stories.
Sponsors of the Gruffalos are Gatwick Airport, Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens, Magic Light Pictures, Macmillan Children’s Books, Swan Walk Shopping Centre, Chestnut Treehouse Hospice, Saxon Weald, Foresters Friendly Society, Forestry Commission, Travel Counsellors, Creative Technology, The Capitol Horsham, Horsham Rotary Club, Brock Taylor, Global Financial, ByJove Media, Tomfoolery, Horsham District Council and Creative Assembly.
Plans for the Gruffalos include them travelling the world with Gatwick Airport, visiting Peru with model Jodie Kidd and Chestnut Treehouse Hospice, visiting all the schools in the District with the Brock Taylor sponsored Gruffalo and enjoying some wine in South Africa with the Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens sponsored one.
Commenting on the Gruffalo launch event, Horsham District Council Deputy Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure Cllr Nigel Jupp said:
“Firstly my thanks to Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens for providing such a magnificent venue for our launch event.
“It was extremely exciting to get together with all the sponsors in advance of them sending their individual Gruffalos off on their travels around the world, and to give them the opportunity of meeting our Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 Patron, Julia Donaldson CBE.
“It was very fitting for the Gruffalo launch to be one of the first major events to kick start our Year of Culture, giving an international flavour to our year-long celebrations and providing local businesses with a unique way of promoting themselves on a global scale.
“I would encourage as many of you as possible to get involved online and share the Gruffalo photos far and wide as they travel the globe.”
Julia Donaldson CBE commented:
“Global Gruffalo is such a fun way of promoting the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 and celebrating the 20th anniversary of The Gruffalo. I can’t wait to see where they end up!”
