Select your top Horsham District landscape scene to celebrate Year of Culture in paint

Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 has commissioned local Sussex artist Sarah Duffield to create a special series of paintings to capture and encapsulate the District’s unique landscape and is inviting the general public to select their favourite scenes.

Sarah received funding from the Year of Culture 2019 grant programme and has been asked to create four landscape paintings to celebrate the beauty and diversity of the Horsham District countryside.

The Year of Culture 2019 team, supported by Horsham District Council, want to engage as many residents as possible with the commission by asking them to pick their favourite District scene for the artist to paint. The top four suggestions will be selected.

Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure Cllr Jonathan Chowen said:

“We were delighted when Sarah Duffield agreed to commemorate the Year of Culture 2019 for us in her unique artistic style.

“This year of cultural celebration presents a golden opportunity to recognise our many beautiful landscapes.

“The great news is that you can all become involved. I would encourage as many of you as possible to come forward with your personal suggestions for the top four landscapes you think Sarah should paint and play your part in creating a legacy long after the 2019 celebrations are over.“

Ideally we want to represent the whole of the District so we are hoping that Sarah gets the opportunity to work across the entire District from North to South and East to West, as each area has a uniqueness and beauty all of its own.

The deadline for ideas submissions is 10 July 2018 and the result of the public vote will be announced by beginning August 2018. Please email your suggestions to [email protected].

Sarah will also be holding a range of opportunities to engage with the whole commissioning process including the chance to see how she works, the techniques she uses and seeing the finished work in exhibition. The images will also be available to buy as limited editions so that everybody has the opportunity to purchase and own a unique part of the year of culture.
