Today's biography is Phanuel Bacon, 13 October 1700 - 10 January 1783.
A Church of England clergyman and playwright, poet and author, Bacon established a reputation for works that were not only comical and satirical but had serious moral messages.
In 1719 he published an epic poem, The Kite, to celebrate the failure of a Jacobote plot to kill King William III. It was in 1734 that he became vicar of Bramber yet he discharged his clerical duties alongside his authorship.
He published many dramatic works based on morality plays making references to morally bankrupt characters. His later satire extended to chiding the government for the proliferation of levies on everything from clothing to food and drink in The Taxes, published in 1757. ...
