We're very proud to have the amazingly successful children's author, Julia Donaldson MBE, as the Patron of the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019.
As a resident of the Horsham district for many years, Julia is the perfect example of the creativity cultivated within this beautiful district and the resulting astounding success.
Julia is the UK’s number one bestselling children's author, best known for The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom and Stick Man and a whole host of whimsical and hilarious books.
The Gruffalo, illustrated by Axel Scheffler, has become a classic children's book - selling over 10 million copies worldwide and being translated into 40 different languages and in 2011-2013 Julia was the children's laureate.
On becoming the Patron for the Year of Culture 2019, Julia said:
"I feel honoured and delighted to be a patron for the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019, and I hope that it brings all of us within the district closer together as a community. There’s so much going on in this area of Sussex and this is a great opportunity for celebration."
Julia is interested in discovering more about the district, and also in seeing what cultural pursuits are created for children and younger people, for example festivals and literature events.
We're looking forward to working with Julia - and who knows, maybe the Gruffalo himself will be spotted within our district?
